Scouting Report: Ian Clarkin LHP
Pitcher name: Ian Clarkin
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Draft status: HS Senior at Madison HS
Physical: Clarkin has sloped shoulders and long limps. He also has a strong lower half but his body still needs time to mature. His loose arm should allow his to progress as he gets older and he has a lot of room to add muscle and gain strength.
Mechanics: He throws from a true ¾ arm slot and has a very high leg kick. He as a very compact delivery and has a high break of the hands, because of this he hides the ball very well and he also pitches from a downward plane.
Fastball: Clarkin’s fastball is clocked anywhere between 88 to 93mph. He shows great command and has very good tail and sink on his fastball. Although his velocity can be inconsistent, his movement can more than makes up for it. It is also my belief that has his body mature and gets stronger you will see more consistencies in his velocity and he could sit around the mid 90’s when all is said and done.
Secondary Pitches: Clarkin’s Curveball sits around 73 to 75 with a very hard 11 to 7 break. It has a very good shape and a tight rotation on it and has the chance of being a plus pitch at the professional level.
Clarkin’s Change up is very impressive at a HS level, he show a great feel and command of the pitch. It is clocked in the high 70’s to low 80’s and show good sinking and tailing action. This could become his bread and butter pitch at the professional level, although it is more of a 3rd pitch at this moment in time.
Summary: I had the chance to see Clarkin pitch at the Area Code games and at Petco for the PG All-American game. His ability to hide the ball is one of his most impressive attitudes; it just makes the rest of his pitches even better. I could see him as a top of the rotation Pitcher in the future.
